What will I learn in this class?
Open to ages 15 and above, this class focuses on the fundamentals of aikido, including form, balance and posture. The emphasis in aikido is on blending with the energy of an attacker, rather than meeting force with force. Techniques are derived from weapons training and students learn how to use the jo (wooden staff) and bokken (wooden sword). At the same time, they develop good posture, an understanding of distance, timing and how to anticipate a partner's moves. No previous experience is necessary.
What are the benefits of this class?
Working with partners rather than opponents, students help one another improve. Aikido training helps students improve mobility as well as cognitive skills like concentration and calm thinking under pressure. Now practiced in more than 140 countries, aikido can provide a boost to students' physical and mental wellness.
Who will teach this class?
Paul Neuman (pictured) is the chief instructor of Pacific Aikido and a fifth-degree black belt. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, he has been teaching aikido to adults and children since 1991 and at the Club since 1999. As part of Pacific Aikido, the Club's aikido group is a registered dojo of the Aikikai Foundation-Aikido World Headquarters.
Classes follow the strict Club guidelines on hygiene and class size. The curriculum allows for no contact and social distancing. Depending on the wishes of each student's family, training can be conducted with some physical contact, weapons training with no contact, or a combination of the two.
