Gallery Exhibition: Kasumi Katagiri

Ceramic artist Kasumi Katagiri is acutely aware of the importance of trial and error in the creative process.

“More than 15 years ago, I tried my own technique to represent many layers of petals and waves, but I could not succeed and gave up,” she explains. “Then one day, more than 15 years later, I came up with the technique for the production used in this exhibition.”

Titled “Positive + Grace,” the exhibition of her exquisitely detailed works at the Frederick Harris Gallery is the result of years of perseverance.

“It was a difficult production,” she says, “but when I saw the finished work, I realized it was exactly what I wanted to make.”

Born in 1960, Katagiri studied contemporary ceramic art in Hong Kong in the early ’90s. It’s there where she began to experiment with pastel glazes. In 1994, she set up her own atelier back in Japan.

All works are available for purchase through Member Services.

Artistic Thoughts
Moment I realized I wanted to become an artist.
KK: There were actually two moments. The first was when I was able to capture my vision in a ceramic work. The second was when I created a work that was beyond my imagination.

What I would tell my 20-year-old self.
KK: If you have an interest in something, don’t hesitate to get started. You may not have everything in place in your 20s, but if you take one step at a time, you can get closer to your goal.

My perfect creative environment.
KK: A place where the city and nature mix.

Artist, living or dead, I’d most like to share a meal with.
KK: James Rizzi, the American pop artist, painter and sculptor.
