Traditional Japanese yuzen dyeworks are as storied as they are beautiful.
What will I learn in this class?
After an introduction to the classical use and history of yuzen techniques, students dye their own handkerchief-sized silk swatches through direct application with the instructor’s guidance. Due to the difficulty of yuzen dyeing’s finishing methods, the instructor will complete these final steps before returning finished products to students.
What is the goal of this class?
Experience an overlooked traditional Japanese art while expanding your artistic portfolio and deepening your appreciation of Japanese aesthetics.
Who teaches this class?
Moriji Murakami’s dyed silk canvases have appeared in galleries across Japan, including the Frederick Harris Gallery. Murakami is also a lecturer of dyed arts at Tsinghua University, the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Shandong University of the arts and many more.
