The Art of Translation

An enlightening conversation with prolific translator Alex O Smith, best known for his translation of Keigo Higashino’s 2005 award-winning novel The Devotion of Suspect X.

Smith’s translation of the book was nominated for both the Edgar Award and Barry Award in 2012 and forms part of a two-decade career of translation of Japanese video games, long and short fiction and more.

At this presentation and Q&A, Smith, who earned a master’s degree in classical Japanese literature from Harvard, will chat about the process of literary translation and how it differs from localization in the booming game industry.

“What appeals to me about translation is that it’s always a challenge. There are always questions and the answers are never clear, so it’s an opportunity to learn,” says Smith.

Come and ask your own questions of an authority in the field of translation.
