Tea Culture and Tradition

The traditional chanoyu ritual has deepened and become more sophisticated as it has been passed down from generation to generation over more than 400 years.

This class, guided by an experienced tea master, will allow participants to enjoy tranquil escape from daily life while exploring the chanoyu world through fascinating stories and insights into Japanese culture.

Instructor
Experienced tea master Sawa Okano has studied the tea ceremony for 30 years. She hosts various chanoyu cultural sessions in English for international students, business executives of major companies, and foreign diplomats and their families. A former vice president of Chase Manhattan Bank, Okano also has an MA in medieval Japanese literature and performing arts from Columbia University.
