Traditional Japanese Games

Take a closer look at Japanese culture through some of its classic games.

What will I learn in this class?
Gain a deeper insight into Japanese culture and history by learning how to play several time-honored pastimes, including card and board games and classic origami. Other games may include shogi, a Japanese take on chess, and kendama, a cup-and-ball game that has spread across the world.

What are the benefits of this class?
Through playing traditional Japanese games, children gain guaranteed ways to make friends with kids of other culture. Some games also promote strategic and critical thinking as a means of securing victory.

Who will teach this class?
Hideyuki Kondo teaches Japanese language and culture as the president at Tsubasa Japanese Language School. Kondo, who also teaches Japanese at the Club, learned the traditional games of Japan in his childhood. Such games, he says, can help students develop communication skills and forge friendships.
