Aikido (Winter)

Learn the culture and techniques of a modern Japanese martial art in a class of up to two students.

What will I learn in this class?

Open to ages 15 and above, this semiprivate class focuses on the fundamentals of aikido, including form, balance and posture. The emphasis in aikido is on blending with the energy of an attacker, rather than meeting force with force. Techniques are derived from weapons training and students learn how to use a jo (wooden staff) and bokken (wooden sword). At the same time, they develop good posture, an understanding of distance, timing and how to anticipate a partner's moves. No previous experience is necessary. With a maximum of two students per class, participants can develop skills and improve quickly.

What are the benefits of this class?
Working with a partner rather than an opponent, students help one another improve. Aikido helps students improve mobility as well as concentration and reaction under pressure. Now practiced in more than 140 countries, aikido can boost physical and mental wellness.

Who will teach this class?
Paul Neuman (pictured) is the chief instructor of Pacific Aikido and a fifth-degree black belt. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, he has been teaching aikido to adults and children since 1991 and at the Club since 1999. As part of Pacific Aikido, the Club's aikido group is a registered dojo of the Aikikai Foundation-Aikido World Headquarters.
