Sumi-e Japanese Ink Painting

Japanese sumi-e is the traditional art of brush and ink painting.


Students learn techniques for different brush strokes, first in traditional black ink and then in color.

Create beautiful works for your home or as gifts while deepening your appreciation for Japan’s traditional arts.

Students also have the chance to exhibit their work a New Year kakizome show.

Instructor: Shoko & Suiko Ohta
Shoko and Suiko are from a family of traditional painters. Shoko has been teaching the art of traditional Japanese painting at the Club and foreign embassies for more than 60 years. Her daughter, Suiko, who studied in Switzerland and the United States, has taught traditional Japanese painting for more than 30 years.
