Take a “backstage tour” of the world of kyogen comic theater at this special TAC Talk.
Three kyogen performers from the Izumi family, one of two main clans of kyogen performers in Japan, will introduce Members to the centuries-old art form during an explanation and performance.
Motoya Izumi, the 20th head of the Izumi school of kyogen, will be joined by his sisters, Junko Izumi, who was the first female kyogen performer, and Tokuro Miyake the 10th (she inherited her grandfather's name), the second woman to break into kyogen.
In the male-dominated world of classical theater in Japan, the Izumi family are well known for their efforts to challenge the status quo and broaden the appeal of kyogen. In fact, Junko and Tokuro appeared at the Club in 2017 and discussed kyogen in a piece in INTOUCH magazine.
With its roots in ancient China, kyogen is performed as a lighthearted interlude during a program of more serious Noh plays.
Attendees will have a chance to ask questions at the end of this exclusive event.
