British wine critic Jancis Robinson didn’t hold back in her review of Ramey Wine Cellars’ 2013 Syrah last year, describing the Sonoma Coast wine as “exceptional.”
“It’s not cheap but it is stunning. Fans of northern Rhône wines will recognize the class, gloss, excitement and majestic fragrance of ripe Syrah, all leather and black pepper, but this is not a frail embryonic bud,” she wrote.
Founded by David and Carla Ramey in 1996 (David formerly created wines at Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd), Ramey crafts award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah from California vineyards.
Members will have the opportunity to sample these Ramey varietals at a dinner hosted by David Fischer, Ramey’s vice president of sales and marketing since 2005.
“[Members] will get to experience the difference between appellation and single vineyard wines, as well as being able to taste an 11-year-old Chardonnay and see how well our single vineyard Chardonnays age,” he says.
“We also will have Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from two great vintages, 2013 and 2014, respectively, so we will be able to talk about the relative quality of recent vintages, the impact of the drought and California styles for Cabernet and Syrah.”
