Gallery Reception: Byou Byou Ten

A Japanese art collective exhibiting at the Club wants to challenge preconceived notions of Japanese painting.

The six artists of Byou Byou Ten, who bring their eclectic works to the Frederick Harris Gallery from July 10 to August 6, experiment with modern and traditional techniques on materials ranging from washi paper to plywood to stockings.

The media and methods range from hybrid pens to painting knives to finely ground minerals mixed with an adhesive animal hide and bone gelatin.

“My wish is stop the viewer for a moment and have them think, ‘Wow!’” says Byou Byou Ten member Hiroshi Miura.
