A former castmate of Japan’s brightest stars of stage and screen, Mieko Yuki has spent a career sharing the spotlight with the most expressive actors of the 20th century.
For the last few decades, she’s honed her talent for capturing their dramatic expressions in her hand-molded clay figurines.
“I’m not so concerned about the shape or the color [of my ceramics],” Yuki says, “but more the expression.”
Yuki brings her kiln-fired collection of ceramics to the Frederick Harris Gallery on March 19 for an exhibition she relates to the plays and films she was a part of in her youth.
From the lighting of her pieces to the ways her audiences move through the gallery, it’s all part of a production with her ceramics in their own starring roles.
“When it comes out of the kiln and I look at it for the first time,” Yuki says of her ceramics, “I understand what its heart is like.”
Yuki’s exhibition runs through April 8.
